This project was a renovation of an existing Al Beadle office building in midtown Phoenix. We wanted a design solution that respected the original architecture while also accommodating the new museum level program. The floor plan consists of a centralized, sky-lit viewing chamber surrounded by the main gallery which in turn is surrounded by the back-of-house spaces. This allowed natural light in all day-to-day work space, while also allowing total light control within the gallery itself. The exterior was clad in fabric panels and dark rip-rap ground cover was used to visually disconnect the building from the ground. Guests enter the gallery via a short flight of stairs, move through the thickness of the outer ring of workspace then enter the gallery itself.
